Innovation as an Engine of Growth

Innovation is a key enabler of growth, however it is often confused with creativity. Whilst creativity is just “having great ideas”, innovation means “having great ideas, choosing the right ones and doing something about it”.

Innovation goes beyond the development of new products and can produce new services, processes or completely new business models. The challenge when developing or reviewing an innovation capability is in understanding where best to focus efforts in order to maximise the return on innovation investment.

Good innovation performance requires strong capabilities in:

  • Idea generation,
  • Prioritisation, and
  • Implementation.

But this is not enough:

An innovation strategy from top management is necessary to guide innovation in the right direction. People management and the organisational structure provide the crucial foundation upon which innovation is built. Achieving an aligned Innovation Culture that actively supports the innovation strategy of the organisation is perhaps the most difficult aspect to achieve.

Cranfield School of Management and iProCon have co-developed an online tool allowing you to
understand the innovation culture of your organisation against five of the most prevalent
innovation culture stereotypes.
